ELECTROTHERAPIES

Electrotherapies are non-invasive, research-based treatment techniques that delivers energy into the body to support healing, improve tissue function and relieve pain. These therapies work by stimulating tissues at a cellular level, helping to create the optimal conditions for recovery and repair.

At Jarvis Veterinary Physiotherapy, we use a range of electrotherapy devices tailored to your animal’s specific needs, including:

  • Apollo Class 3b Laser

  • Therapeutic Ultrasound

  • Westville Bio-mag PEMFT

  • Epiony Heat Pad

  • Transcutaneous Electrical Nerve Stimulation

Electrotherapies are included at no extra cost as part of our standard physiotherapy sessions, where appropriate for your animal's condition. These modalities are carefully selected and tailored to each individual animal—whether the goal is rehabilitation, pain management, or enhancing performance.

For ongoing rehabilitation or specific injury care, Laser / Ultrasound-Only Sessions can also be booked as follow-ups. Please note: a full physiotherapy assessment is required first to ensure treatment is safe and suitable.

Apollo Class 3B Laser

  • Uses targeted wavelengths of light to stimulate cellular activity, promoting healing, reducing inflammation, and easing pain. It’s especially effective in areas with poor circulation or delayed healing.

  • This therapy is particularly beneficial for conditions such as arthritis, tendonitis, tendinopathy, trigger points, and wound management.

Therapeutic Ultrasound

  • Differs from diagnostic ultrasound—it uses soundwaves to create thermal and mechanical effects within tissues. These vibrations help boost circulation, enhance cell function, and support healing.

  • It’s especially useful for reducing swelling, breaking down adhesions, improving scar tissue alignment, and increasing soft tissue flexibility. A safe, non-toxic gel is applied during treatment and easily wiped off afterwards.

Pulsed Electromagnetic Field Therapy

  • Uses high-frequency magnetic pulses to stimulate cellular activity and support tissue repair. By enhancing ion movement across cell membranes, it promotes healing in damaged areas.

  • Depending on the settings, PEMFT can increase or decrease blood flow, making it useful throughout different stages of injury. It also helps relieve pain, supports nerve regeneration, and can assist in fracture healing.

Thermotherapy (Heat)

  • Boosts blood flow, bringing oxygen and nutrients to support healing and increase metabolic activity. It also helps relax muscles, reduce pain, improve flexibility, and ease stiffness.

  • However, heat should not be used within the first 72 hours of an injury, as it may worsen inflammation. Always consult your vet or a qualified professional if you're unsure.

TENS Machine

  • Uses low-voltage electrical currents to relieve pain. It works by delivering small electrical impulses through electrodes placed on the skin, which help block pain signals from reaching the brain and stimulate the release of endorphins, the body's natural painkillers.

  • In physiotherapy, TENS is commonly used to manage pain, reduce muscle spasms, improve blood circulation, and support recovery from injuries or surgery.
